The Role of Legal Sociology in Advancing Social Justice in Society

Abstract

Legal sociology examines the reciprocal relationship between law and society and provides an important perspective for understanding the role of law in addressing social realities. In social life, law functions not only as a set of written rules but also as an instrument for promoting social justice, which requires fair treatment for all segments of society without discrimination. This article aimed to analyze the role of legal sociology in understanding how law can contribute to the realization of social justice through an approach that considers the social, cultural, and economic conditions of society. The study employed a normative legal research method with a socio-legal approach to examine the relationship between legal norms and social conditions. The analysis focused on how legal rules operate within society and how social realities influence the implementation and effectiveness of law in achieving justice. The findings showed that a just legal system is one that responds to the needs and changing conditions of society, protects vulnerable groups, and ensures equal access to justice. The discussion further indicated that understanding the social dimensions of law is essential for developing legal policies and practices that are more responsive and inclusive. This study contributes to the understanding of legal sociology as an important framework for strengthening the relationship between legal norms and social realities. In practical and policy terms, the findings suggest that the development and implementation of law should consider social, cultural, and economic conditions to promote substantive social justice.
